Stowage of the British Slave Ship Brookes (ca. 1790)

This work is attributed to the English abolitionist Thomas Clarkson who tirelessly collected and published reports and records of the inhumanity of the slave trade. The artist who rendered the illustration is unknown. There were many variations of the graphic and it found broad distribution as a single printed page and in newspapers. It shows various sections of a transport ship and the "stowage" of enslaved people in the lower deck.
