Data Literacy in Social Studies Standards

The College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards was published in 2013 by the National Council for the Social Studies. It provides guidance for the development of state social studies standards and can serve as an excellent reference for classroom curriculum development.  The document also provides guidance for what students should know and be able to do with data visualizations. Sometimes references to data literacy in the C3 Framework are obvious, but other times language in the standards only implies the use of data visualizations.

The document below will guide you through analysis of the C3 Framework and help you consider how the document addresses data literacy.  After you read through this document, carry out a similar type of analysis with your own state social studies standards.  Michigan social studies teachers can find your standards here
